History

Famous for its castle and cheese, the town dates back many hundreds of years. The castle was built between 1268 and 1271 by Gilbert de Clare to subdue the local Welsh lords. It is the biggest castle in Wales and second only to Windsor. Massive walls, towers and gatehouses were combined with water defences to cover an area of 30 acres. It was during the Civil War that the castle was partly destroyed and which left the south east tower leaning at a precarious angle.
